People are beginning to inquire what new breed of rats we have in Greens boro that can calculate to within ten minutes when 2 o'clock Sunday morn ing comes, 10 as to know when to paint the town red.- The circum stance ia calculate to awaken Inquiry, at least By reason of one fact, which ought not to be, that the courthouse key it not kept where it can be had at a mo men, warning, it was sometime be fore the court house bell began to ring its alarm, but as soon as was p )ssible the fire company was at wont with that zeal and determination which they always display. Whrti the alarm began to ring the engine was out and had on five pounds of steam. There was no trouble a'ter the engine got at its work. The lo cation ol the fire was in the middle of the block of wooden stores between the Guilford House and McDonald street, and when the engine arrived the block was so thoroughly envelop ed in flames that its destruction was inevitable. Five streams of water played on the fire, and with these the fire was confined to the one block. The condition of things was alarm ingly critics).' It was 25 feet to the Guilford House, and had taken fire the flames would have swept on in definitely northwarddoing incalcula- ble damage. An abundance ot wa ter thrown on the Guilford House stayed the progress of the fire in that directiou. .
